Volleyball in Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage in the 90's, Part 2

In 1992 the IPT was held at the University of Durban Westville (UDW). This was a historic tournament as the first non-racial volleyball tournament and it lived up to all the greatest expectations. The hall was packed for almost all the matches that were played. From the round-robin to the knockout matches.

That year the EP team comprised of players Deon Standers, Charl Petrus, Allan Showan, Adrian Strijdom, Martin Muller,  Marlin Lottering as the firest six on court. The bench had players like Tony Jacobs who was meant to be the first setter but hurt himself in the warm-ups of the very first match EP was meant to play and was out of the tournament. Cedric (attie) Rademeyer, Sharief Frost, Roderic Petrus (kierrie), Ashley Smith, Dave Mee. Coach of this star studded team was Peter Cox.

In the round-robin contest one of the big names that EP faced was Western Province that had some of the best players in the country. Most of these players I only know by there nicknames or just first name so here goes. Marcelle Rose, AB Louis and Ricky Stevens in the middle. The setters was Hughboy and Dominic Goliath that was only 15 at that time and played in the senior mens team was also there.
This was a very strong team and in this encounter they had EP down 2 sets and were on match point in the 3rd set leading by 14  to 7. This was at the time when scoring was based on the service point system and not the rally points. EP had an inspired match and came back to take that set and later the match.

EP then went on to face Natal B team in the semi-finals that was another Hotly contested 5 setter that ended with EP as the victors. Players on this team included Bernard Wheatley  and Ulrich Hargraves (Joobs).

The Finals was a contest between EP and Natal A with Natal having the home crowd advantage. This was a very strong team with lots of experience but they could not stand up against the EP team and fell in 3 straight sets making EP the winners of the tournament (Gold medalists).
